What's it like to be a Building Inspector?
Building Inspectors carry out inspections of commercial and residential buildings to ensure structures comply with laws and regulations. Inspections may be carried out prior, during or after building work has been completed, and help ensure that buildings are safe, structurally sound and accessible.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
- Advising on building requirements.
- Issuing building permits.
- Certifying structure and plan compliance with the corresponding building regulations.
Building Inspectors have a working knowledge of the construction industry and trades and are able to verify the quality of work of building tradespersons. The also identify any defects or issues impacting building such as structural weakness, poor electrical wiring, asbestos, mould or other safety hazards.

To become a Building Inspector you need demonstrated knowledge of the construction industry and Australian Building Codes. Vocational training is required, as well as a Construction Induction Card (White Card).
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification such as a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220), Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying (CPC60121), or a Bachelor of Construction Management.
- 2.Registration or licensing may be required, so it’s important to check specific requirements with the licensing authority in your state.
- 3.To work on any building site in Australia, you will need to hold a Construction Induction Card (White Card). It may also be an advantage to be a member of a professional building inspector association.
