What's it like to be an Economist?
As an Economist you will be primarily concerned with analysing the production, distribution and consumption of resources, goods and services.
Tasks and duties
- Carrying out surveys and collecting macroeconomic data (i.e. consumption spending, business investment, government spending, exports and imports) in order to predict when a rise or fall in the growth of the economy will occur.
- Preparing reports and charts that forecast market trends (e.g. retail spending, housing approvals).
- Collating and interpreting complex information and data such as terms of trade or exchange rate movements.
- Using spreadsheets, software programs, database management programs, and statistical analysis.
- Creating mathematical models to predict future economic developments.
- Communicating your findings in reports and charts to make the data understandable to stakeholders.
- Analysing microeconomic data such as market share and size of companies.
Economists provide forecasts to governments and businesses on matters such as wages and prices, unemployment rates, imports and exports, taxes, and interest and exchange rates. This helps governments and corporations make informed policy and investment decisions.
