What's it like to be an Environmental Scientist?
Environmental Scientists are interested in monitoring the impact of development and human activity on the environment. Environmental Scientists develop policies and implement plans to ensure environmental sustainability. Educating the community about the need for conservation and environmentally sound practices is an important part of this role.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing current environmental challenges.
- Analysing and monitoring the effects of pollution and land degradation on habitat, wildlife and fisheries and recommending ways of prevention and control.
- Conducting research and preparing proposals to minimise the impact of industrial, agricultural and urban processes on the environment.
- Enforcing laws and regulations to protect wildlife.
- Assisting with environmental emergencies, such as oil spills.
- Rehabilitating land, water and air affected by mining, logging, construction, degradation or pollution.
- Developing environmental policies, strategies and codes of practice.
- Conducting environmental audits.

A bachelor degree in Environmental Science, or a bachelor degree in Science or Applied Science with a major in Environmental Science or Natural Resource Management is usually required to become an Environmental Scientist.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in Environmental Science or a related qualification. These are generally three-year courses, open to anyone who is 17 or over and has completed Year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of the following subjects is usually required: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Environmental Science.
- 2.Consider complete postgraduate studies in your chosen field.
- 3.Explore opportunities in federal, state and territory government departments or local councils. You may also find employment as an environmental consultant working with engineering companies or in the minerals and energy industries.
