What's it like to be a Placement Officer?
Placement Officers help students to find work placements with relevant employers. The goal of a placement is to provide students with workplace experience and assist them with their transition into the workforce. Placement Officers look for placement opportunities that match the skills and preferences of their student candidates. They usually work for tertiary education providers such as universities, TAFEs, RTOs and specialised training organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Finding placement opportunities for students.
- Building and maintaining relationships with students to discover skills and preferences.
- Liaising with students and employers during placements.
- Fostering relationships with local placement providers.
- Negotiating terms of placements with providers.
- Conducting pre-placement background checks.
- Providing lists of placement students to course coordinators.
- Reporting student or workplace issues.
- Providing information and documentation about placements to students.

You can work as a Placement Officer without formal qualifications, but a qualification may be beneficial. Some employers such as universities may prefer candidates with a bachelor degree. Background checks are required.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification. This could be a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management (BSB40420) or Diploma of Business (BSB50120). Alternatively, complete a bachelor degree majoring in human resource management or a related field. This usually takes three years and may provide an advantage if you wish to work as a university Placement Officer.
- 2.Look for internship opportunities and student services roles while studying to gain relevant experience.
- 3.Complete a Police Check, Working with Children Check and other background checks as necessary.
